DCCCA
Inc: Substance Abuse Treatment Programming
For nearly three
decades, DCCCA Inc. has provided quality substance abuse services
to a wide range of client populations. Over that period of time,
DCCCA has established a network of programs across the state of
Kansas to provide licensed facilities and certified substance abuse
counselors to accommodate the needs of our state’s consumers.
DCCCA, Inc.
believes that chemical dependency is a disease that is treatable,
and that the progression of the disease can be influenced by and
through treatment. DCCCA also believes that each person has assets
and strengths, which may be improved through counseling and education
that assists the client in developing alternatives to chemical use
and abuse.
All of DCCCA’s
treatment facilities are licensed by the Office of Addiction and
Prevention Services (AAPS), a department of the State of Kansas
Social and Rehabilitation Services. In addition, many are also licensed
through the Department of Health and Environment and meet the requirements
of appropriate city and local inspections.
Counselors working
directly with clients within the substance abuse field, must be
certified through education and experience by AAPS, and all clinical
work is independently reviewed and monitored on a regular basis.
Our consumers
come to us through a variety of referral options. Some recognize
the need to regain control of their lives and self-refer. Others
may come in contact with the criminal justice system or SRS and are encouraged to complete a substance abuse program or face
other consequences. Regardless of how they arrive, clients are served
by DCCCA programs independent of personal history or financial standing.
DCCCA, along
with most other Kansas agencies providing substance abuse treatment,
are funded by a variety of sources: State and Federal funding for
those clients who meet specific income guidelines, service agreements
with other social service agencies, personal insurance or Healthwave
coverage, and self-pay agreements. It is important to note that
DCCCA does not deny treatment to anyone based solely on their ability
to pay.
To receive treatment
which qualifies for state funding (in part or in whole), it is required
that a substance abuse assessment be completed prior to admission.
This should be done through one of the Regional Alcohol and Drug
Assessment Centers (RADAC), however in some cases you may be able
to complete an assessment at the DCCCA facility where intake is
anticipated. Consumers are encouraged to contact their local RADAC
to determine level of treatment and funding.
The following
treatment facilities are operated by DCCCA, Inc.:
Women’s
Recovery Center – Central Kansas
Wichita
Contact WRC-CK
Women’s
Recovery Center – Central Kansas (WRC-CK) is the largest of
DCCCA’s programs providing services to women, women with dependent
children, and pregnant women. This program, along with two others,
offers women with dependent children the opportunity to complete
residential treatment while continuing to parent their child(ren).
WRC-CK, a 56
bed facility, offers the full continuum of treatment modalities.
An Intermediate program offers a 24-hour therapeutic residential
setting for diagnostic and primary treatment services for clients
with current or recent alcohol and/or drug abuse, whose assessment
indicates a benefit from time-limited, intensive treatment. A typical
length of stay is 30-45 days, based on individualized treatment
plans and clinical need.
WRC-CK utilizes
several techniques to maximize the potential for successful completion
of treatment. A strengths approach to behavior modification, coupled
with cognitive restructuring and 12-Step program involvement has
been found effective in aiding recovery.
An Intensive
Outpatient Program (IOP) provides a minimum of 15 hours of structured
activities, including at least 10 hours of counseling per week.
IOP services can be residential or community based. A Relapse Prevention
model is incorporated into the treatment design.
Outpatient Programming
provides substance abuse treatment in a non-residential setting.
Diagnostic and primary treatment services are provided on both a
group and individual basis.
WRC-CK offers
a unique and innovative program, called Footprints. It is designed
to provide treatment, education, parenting and support to pregnant
women or women with newborns who are (or may be) drug affected at
birth. This program is longer term and allows new mothers to learn
nurturing skills, establish bonds with their infants, and utilize
facility child care services while participating in treatment activities.
Case Management services play a vital role in re-integrating these
clients back into the community and their extended families.
The Wichita
facility also works with Corrections to provide beds for women on
Federal Probation and counseling services for SB 123 referrals.
Assessment and drug testing services are offered at the facility
and 4 Social Detox beds are available 24 hours a day. A Registered
Nurse is on staff.
Women’s
Recovery Center – Hoisington
Contact WRC-H
Women’s
Recovery Center – Hoisington (WRC-H) serves the entire state,
but many of its clients come from more rural Western Kansas communities.
This 46-bed facility also serves women and women with dependent
children on an apartment-style campus.
The services
offered at the Hoisington women’s program are similar to those
at WRC-CK, although location dictates that the Intensive Outpatient
Program is primarily residential due to distance from home. This
means referral sources and clients should be prepared for a longer-term
treatment stay at Hoisington.
WRC-H, additionally,
offers reintegration programming. This provides residential living
of a supportive nature for recovering alcoholics and/or drug-dependent
persons. Reintegration services are designed for consumers who need
a low-intensity, structured program of individual or group counseling.
WRC-H is one of only 4 reintegration programs in Kansas, specifically
for women and women with dependent children.
WRC-H provides
child care for women living on campus, as well as offering limited
child care services to the community of Hoisington.
Assessment,
drug testing and nursing services are all provided at the facility.
Women’s
Recovery Center – Topeka
Contact WRC-T
Women’s Recovery Center – Topeka (WRC-T), is a gender-specific program operated by DCCCA to offer outpatient services to the specialty population of women with substance abuse issues and treatment needs. A newly remodeled facility in Southwest Topeka offers easy access from the 410 Loop with a safe, pleasant, and professional atmosphere for clients to attend groups.
WRC-T offers substance abuse counseling to women through intensive outpatient groups, meeting several times per week, and lower intensity outpatient treatment modalities. Programming is based on a client’s strengths and their ability to develop new ways of thinking and coping. Behavior modification, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and involvement in 12-step activities, provide multiple tools to support women in maintaining sobriety and moving through the recovery process.
Group and individual sessions are offered in both levels of treatment. As indicated by client need, weekly vocational groups may be provided through the Topeka Workforce Center and domestic violence education and support groups may be facilitated by volunteers from the Battered Women’s Taskforce.
WRC-T accepts referrals from all sources and supports partnerships with many local groups including the local Drug Court, Drug Endangered Child Task Force, and hospitals.
SB123 groups are available, as well as aftercare support groups. Assessments can be provided on-site and women seeking treatment are encouraged to call for an appointment.
In addition to group and individual counseling, women are encouraged to attend community AA/NA meetings in support of their outpatient treatment. Drug testing services are available on-site.
OPTIONS
Adult Services-Wichita
Contact OAS
DCCCA’s
OPTIONS Adult Services Program – (OAS) provides a comprehensive
model of substance abuse treatment to adult males. Located in Wichita,
one of Kansas’s largest metropolitan areas, OAS clients come
primarily from Sedgwick County but are accepted from referral sources
state-wide. Treatment services include entry level detoxification,
an intermediate residential program with a duration of 14-21 days,
long-term reintegration treatment, and various outpatient and aftercare
services.
OAS staff utilize
the 12-step model in conjunction with cognitive self-change strategies
as treatment approaches. Counselors carefully assess client individual
needs to provide the most effective combination of interventions.
OAS accepts
admissions 24 hours a day, 365 days per year and has an open admission
policy. OAS will not discriminate in any manner prohibited by law,
nor deny services based on a client’s ability to pay. Individuals
at or below Federal Poverty Guidelines will be eligible for funding
through the State of Kansas. Private insurance and private pay are
also accepted from those seeking addictions treatment.
It is OAS’s
policy to serve clients with felony and/or misdemeanor charges or
convictions, as well as those with pending legal issues. OAS does
reserve the right to deny admission to individuals with sexual offenses
or current warrants for their arrest.
Non-medical
emergency social detoxification is provided to address a person’s
ability to safely manage withdrawal; engage the client in further
treatment; and, provide an environment that is humane and respects
the client’s dignity. 6 beds are designated as Social Detox
beds, and continued treatment and/or referral, is provided after
completion of this pre-treatment period.
Intermediate
treatment has as its goal the stabilization and education of substance
addicted persons in a non-medical, short-term residential setting.
Men must meet criteria that indicate the need for this intensively
structured and therapeutically controlled environment. Case management
services are implemented to assist the client in linking with community-based
service that can help explore psychological issues, establish vocational
and/or educational progress, begin repairing family damage and begin
any restitution process the client may need to fulfill.
OAS has 16 Intermediate
beds and clients stay in this level of treatment 14-21 days and
are supervised on an around the clock basis. Structured activities
are in place from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Residential
Re-Integration Treatment typically follows a residential treatment
program. These clients work during the day and attend individual
or group session in the evening, as well as 12-step support groups.
They receive frequent UA’s and abstinence is expected. After
completion of this level (1 to 6 months) these men continue into
an outpatient program. OAS designates 25 beds for men in this program.
Like other DCCCA
treatment programs, OAS offers both an Intensive Outpatient modality
and an aftercare, outpatient program for long term recovery support.

Elm Acres Recovery
Services – Elm Acres has recently become part of the DCCCA
organization, and offers multiple adolescent treatment opportunities
to Kansas young people. With the main campus located in southeast
Kansas (Pittsburg), Elm Acres has been providing much needed substance
abuse services to an under-served area of the state for over 20
years.
Elm Acres provides
intermediate (residential) substance abuse treatment, intensive
outpatient and aftercare to adolescent boys and girls, ages 13-18.
High quality, cost-effective, short-term (usually 28 days) programs
assist clients in understanding their addiction and beginning the
recovery process.
While recognizing
that chemical dependency is primarily a disease, Elm Acres’ counselors also address life issues which are specific to adolescents:
school, family, self-image, self-control, relationships with others,
sexuality and values. Not every young person has all of these problems,
but each of them will have a particular set of issues that need
attention. Utilizing a variety of approaches, including introduction
to the 12-step program, social skills training, and cognitive behavioral
therapy components, Elm Acres Recovery Service staff work to develop
individual treatment plans that are meaningful and attainable for
their clients.
Elm Acres programming
includes Evaluation and Assessment to determine treatment needs;
Counseling sessions which may be group, individual or family; Educational
Programs for any youth that does not have a high school diploma
or GED; Recreation and Activities accessible through community facilities;
Family Involvement which is encouraged through family groups and
weekend visitations; and, Aftercare that provides on-going support
and relapse prevention for those just beginning their journey towards
recovery.
The Elm Acres
Outpatient Substance Abuse program serves adolescents in Pittsburg
and Columbus. In addition to supporting youth who have successfully
completed their residential program, Elm Acres also has expertise
in working with young people in foster care, JJA custody, and community
agencies. They offer assistance to schools, court services and social
service agencies in identifying and treating young people with issues
related to substance use and abuse.
Outpatient treatment
continues to address the many associated issues that become barriers
for adolescent recovery: Depression, ADHD, Family predisposition
for addiction, Social isolation, Behavior problems, Family conflicts,
and Learning disabilities. Treatment consists of identifying individual
using patterns, increasing awareness and insight into the dangers
of addiction, and making necessary lifestyle changes to maintain
abstinence.
Relapse prevention
groups help adolescents associate patterns and triggers so that
prevention strategies can be developed.
Elm Acres Recovery
Services is licensed by the State of Kansas and approved for Medicaid.
(Medicaid eligible youth must be screened for admission through
the Regional Alcohol and Drug Abuse Assessment Center) Agency staff
attempt to help families seek insurance approval. Healthwave and
private pay agreements are also accepted.
First Step at Lake View-Lawrence
Contact FSLV
First Step at Lake View – (FSLV) is DCCCA’s newest women’s treatment facility located on the south edge of Lawrence, Kansas. FSLV provides a quiet campus setting with large areas of green space and relaxing views from all areas of the building.
FSLV provides treatment services to women, women with dependent children and pregnant women. This program, along with two other DCCCA locations, offers women with young children the opportunity to complete residential treatment while continuing to parent their children.
Sixty (60) residential beds allow FSLV to offer a full continuum of treatment modalities. Intermediate residential programming allows 24-hour therapeutic diagnostic and primary treatment services for clients dealing with existing or recent alcohol or drug abuse issues. Lengths of stay at the facility are determined by individualized treatment plans and medical necessity.
FSLV utilizes a strengths approach to behavior modification, while addressing the cognitive issues that are at work in maintaining addictive thought processes. 12-step program involvement is strongly encouraged as an adjunct to successful recovery and limiting relapse potential.
An Intensive Outpatient program offers a minimum of nine (9) hours of counseling per week and may be residential or community-based. Less intensive outpatient groups are available and relapse prevention curriculum is included in all levels of treatment. Counseling may be provided through group activities or in individual sessions.
Through a Reintegration program, FSLV provides women, who have completed intermediate treatment, the opportunity to slowly move back into the community. To help them accomplish this transition and continue their recovery, each client is assigned both a primary counselor and a case manager with whom they meet weekly.
While at FSLV, women in the reintegration phase of treatment may pursue educational, vocational, volunteer or community service work. Groups focus on addiction triggers, healthy relationships, coping skills, and relapse prevention methods. During this part of their program women may be responsible for housekeeping responsibilities in the facility, and some meal preparation. Clients are encouraged to work in the community while they save money for a fresh start and safe housing.
Working with a case manager, clients are connected to many community-based services: such as, Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority, Health Care Access, Adult Learning Center, ECKAN, Douglas County Dental Clinic, Independence Inc. and other supporting agencies. FSLV will work to assist women in finding jobs, housing, learning to budget money, continue their education, improve parenting skills, and become independent.
After completion of the program at FSLV, women will typically continue with after care on an outpatient basis. These women may also return as motivational speakers to share their experiences, successes, and strength, offering a hopeful outlook to current residents.
Many women will qualify for funding through the SAPTR Block Grant, Medicaid, or recently passed Senate Bills 123 and 67.
Child care is provided on site for qualifying clients.
Great Bend Addiction Services
Contact GBAS
In November of 2007, DCCCA, Inc. established an Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment program in Barton County, Kansas. Long recognized as an area that lacked treatment options, the emergence of DCCCA’s Great Bend Outpatient Services (GBAS) programming has added substance abuse treatment, case management services, and low-cost assessment alternatives to its list of community resources.
Located in north-central Kansas, GBAS provides low-cost initial assessments, referral services, individual and group counseling to individuals with substance abuse issues. Evidence-based curriculum, individualized treatment planning, educational groups, relapse prevention and continuing care are offered for both adults and adolescents through the outpatient programming.
All counselors are AAPS certified and the outpatient program is licensed through SRS’s Addiction and Prevention Services. DCCCA’s GBAS provides the most comprehensive and intensive outpatient services in Barton County, placing and emphasis on customer service and being responsive to the need for flexible client scheduling. Groups and individual counseling sessions are offered during the day and evening to accommodate the work and school schedules of our clients.
A proven combination of Cognitive Behavioral techniques and basic 12-step philosophies merge into a curriculum that changes an individual’s way of acting, by changing the way they think, and then supporting those changes with encouraging involvement in community groups such as NA or AA. Relapse prevention and continuing care groups add continuity to the primary treatment process.
While new to the Great Bend area, DCCCA’s counseling staff has already established complimentary relationships with several area resources. A case management program for pregnant women, Health in Pregnancy, is co-located with GBAS and community case managers with Heartland’s Regional Alcohol and Drug Assessment Center provide valuable referrals and community reintegration support to clients in Barton County. Counseling staff are active in community presentations on substance abuse risk factors.
GBAS offers counseling and separate group activities for adult men and women, and provides age-appropriate lecture, treatment and interventions for adolescents.
