Foster Parenting in Kansas

For some people the idea of opening their home to a foster child seems like an understandably overwhelming commitment. Did you know there are many different types of foster homes that are in high demand including short term specialized homes? Because life is unpredictable: emergencies arise, parents need a rest, and unforeseen circumstances make these short term homes a welcome addition to our foster family program. We also look for families who take one child, sibling sets or multiple children, or children with special physical or mental health needs. Child Placing Agency Programs & Services

Family

Family placement for children who are in the custody of DCF.  These children can be in the home for short or long periods of time. The homes can provide placement for one child or multiple children.

Juvenile Justice Foster Care (JJFC)

Sometimes youth become involved with the legal system due to a crime or crimes they have committed and may be referred to a foster home by their Court Services Officer.  These kids often benefit from a foster home setting while working on reintegrating with their family.

Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED Respite)

SED respite is short term care for children that are receiving services from their local mental health center and are on the SED Waiver. Respite care is generally Friday to Sunday but can vary based on the availability of the respite home.  Children receiving this service are not in DCF custody.  This service may be provided simultaneously with other types of care.

Professional Resource Family Care (PRFC)

PRFC is a short term service, usually 30-60 days that can be provided to children on the SED waiver with authorization by the mental health center. This service is generally utilized when children are transitioning from a Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) or to prevent a child from being placed in a PRTF. Children receiving this service are not in DCF custody. This service may be provided simultaneously with other types of care.

Connections

Connections is a specialized program developed by DCCCA for children from the ages of 5-18, who have a history of emotional instability and/or problem behaviors who struggle in family settings.

High Needs

High Needs foster homes provide care for children that need additional services or structure including in-home counseling

Police Protective Custody

Sometimes the police are forced to remove children from a dangerous home environment. These children have often been traumatized and need a short term, safe, loving environment while DCF investigates the safety of their biological home environment.

Respite

Short-term care which allows placement for a child while the foster family is unavailable. Respite often takes place from a Friday to Sunday.

Emergency

Care for a child in need of immediate protection and placement for overnight or a short period of time.

All DCCCA foster families are supported by a Specialist that is available to them 24 hours a day to provide support through their fostering experience. Our staff work in tandem with other agencies and services involved with the child to support the foster family and help the child succeed.
